The Perfect Storm of Serendipity

I imagine that to some degree just about every biomedical research scientist has
been where I was in September of 2004; scooped!
As an eager second-year academic post-doc at the time, I was fully
engaged in a couple of very promising projects related to hepatic and
intestinal health that I thought would be the niche I would fill for the
long-term. In particular, my primary
focus was developing a probiotic bacterium transformed with a recombinant
plasmid designed to deliver a protein critically involved in maintenance of
intestinal health.
