I’m excited to tell you about a new event that we’ve had in development for a few months now. It’s the Virtual Job Summit, and it’s scheduled to start on August 1st. The Virtual Job Summit is an online Job Fair that’s open only to Bio Careers jobseekers. It will take place in a virtual environment where you navigate through a Lobby into Halls where Employers will have virtual Booths set up.
A big thank you to all of you who participated in our second Virtual Job Summit in early April. You made it a big success! Our participating employers were pleased with the quality of the scientists they met.
Thanks also to Coach Tom and Lauren Celano, who devoted their time to giving one on one advice to scientists who needed job search strategy, resume, and interview help. These sessions were also a great success, judging by the comments of some jobseekers who availed themselves of these opportunities.
For the past two months, Bio Careers members have been gearing up for the Spring 2012 Virtual Job Summit. As one of the most effective and creative resources Bio Careers provides, this biannual event brings together employers in academia, industry and other fields with life science postgraduate jobseekers. The inaugural event in 2011 was a tremendous success with over 600 scientists in attendance, and marked the first online job summit exclusively for life scientists.
You know that an academic life may not be the right one for you, but what do you do now?
For many people, myself included, the academic path has been a straightforward one that offered little opportunity to learn about the other career choices available in the world. Even as I knew I wanted to leave bench science, at first I didn’t know where to look or where to go. And when I did search for opportunities, I ended up searching for only things directly related to biology. (Which you don’t have to do!)
My life after obtaining a Ph.D. has been one that’s filled with change and opportunities. Since I graduated from the Neuroscience Program at the University of Michigan last summer, I have launched campus organizations, led my own entrepreneurial team in exciting projects, became a postdoctoral fellow, and had a number of interview experiences in vastly different career fields.
We’ve all heard that question before. Even if one just answers “out,” not wanting to get into the details, it’s good to have a destination in mind. Some of you will have guessed that this is really a metaphor for life after grad school. Want another one? I saw a cartoon in the New Yorker magazine with a self-proclaimed prophet standing on a sidewalk and holding a sign reading “the end is near.” A man in a business suit is asking him “Yes, but what are your goals?”
One of the problems with last fall’s Job Summit that we heard back from you about was that some booths were terribly overcrowded, and it was hard to reach a recruiter even during their Office Hours.
We heard you!
For the Spring Summit, there will be a link at each booth to a sign up sheet. You can place your name on the signup sheet any time between Feb 1st and the Office Hours on April 4th and 5th. Recruiters will use the list to invite you to a one on one chat.
We’re getting very excited about this Spring’s Job Summit, which opens Feb 1st (you can begin reviewing the Employer Booths) with live days on April 4th and 5th (you can video chat with Employers during their Office Hours).
Hi Everyone!
